About Kibbutz Sha'ar HaGolan
Situated in the Jordan Valley, 1 km from the border, at the foot of the Golan Heights. Founded in 1937 by a Zionist socialist youth movement as a tower and stockade settlement. During the 1948 Independence war, the kibbutz was captured and briefly held by the Syrian Army, looted and burned down, but the members soon returned and rebuilt their kibbutz. In 1950 they have opened the Museum of Yarmukian Culture, exhibiting pre-historic findings discovered along the banks of the nearby Yarmuk River.
