About The Negev Desert & The Ramon Crater
Shaped like an elongated heart the Ramon Crater is 500 m' (1500 ft.) deep, 40 kilometers long and 2 to 10 kilometers wide. This erosive crater, encompassing a vast diversity of rocks of fantastic colors and forms, is geologically known as "Machtesh" and is a part of the Ramon Nature Reserve which includes also the surrounding High Negev Mountains.

Ramon Crater & Ancients Desert Trails - Departs from Mitzpe Ramon Jeep tour departs from Mitzpe Ramon descending into the Machtesh (the crater) to explore its geological marvels. Ride via Wadi Ramon to Gvanim Ridge for a spectacular view over the whole crater. Proceed along Wadi Gvanim, stop at the acacia tree, hopefully see some gazelles & other desert wildlife. On to visit "Khan Saharonim" an ancient Nabatean Inn. Take a short walk to its water source. Proceed by jeep following the "Dekalim Trail" part of the "Spice Route", an ancients Nabatean & Nomadic trail that lead to Petra. Stop for our picnic lunch at a small, but shaded cave. Following lunch we will go for another short walk into the "white Canyon". Return to the jeeps and drive via the "Ardon Valley" back to Mitzpe Ramon. Route may alter in accordance with season & weather conditions. Picnic lunch chicken (served cold) a variety of cooked & fresh salads, bread, fruit, tea, coffee & cookies. Bring along Your own water bottle, comfortable shoes, warm clothes between Oct. to Mar., snacks for the way. The Fresh Water Springs Trail - Departs from Mitzpe Ramon Jeep tour departs from Mitzpe Ramon with some road driving towards Sde Boker at which point we will leave the main road & the enter the desert by crossing the "Tzin Plateau" to the Tzin Trail until the fresh water springs of Ein Ziq & Ein Shaviv. At springs we will go for a short walk to explore & understand desert flora & fauna. Proceed by jeep to "Ein Akev", a natural water pool, those who dare can dip into this clear & cold pool! Picnic lunch & proceed by jeep drive via the Tzin Valley and ascend the serpentine trail to the Haloukim Ridge to visit an archaeological site. Cross the Bsor vast dry riverbed & ascend the Boker Ridge for a fantastic view over the whole High Negev Plateau. Return to Mitzpe Ramon. Route may alter in accordance with season & weather conditions. Picnic lunch chicken (served cold) a variety of cooked & fresh salads, bread, fruit, tea, coffee & cookies.
